May 31- September 2014 at the Vancouver Art Gallery Douglas Coupland: everywhere is anywhere is anything is everything was organized and circulated by the Vancouver Art Gallery and curated by Daina Augaitis, Chief Curator/Associate Director.
Few art exhibitions allow photography, however at Douglas Coupland‘s exhibition photography was not only allowed it was encouraged. This was a special visual and intellectual exhibition. Most everyone was interacting with the art through the taking of photographs or videos, including myself.
“The Brain focuses on a major new sculpture comprised of 5000 objects the artist has collected over the years, serving as a metaphor for the complicated ways in which the brain functions and calling into question ideas of collecting and collections.” (copied from www.couplandto.ca)
A man in a bright orange jump suit unzipped to his navel revealing a hairy chest was walking around studying “The Brain”. A docent had previously told me the objects were secured. Making up part of the brain was a small free standing make-up mirror. I watched the orange jump suit man pick up the mirror and admire himself for a few seconds and then put it down. So for being secured. A shot I know I missed, but it is in my brain.
